Cette phrase est celle de Gertrud, personnage du dernier film éponyme de Carl Theodor Dreyer, lorsqu’elle reçoit son vieil ami, Axel, venu de Paris, rendre une dernière visite, dans sa résidence, à cette brave femme, oubliée du monde entier, comme elle le dit elle-même. Ces mots donnent un écho infini à tous les autres instants de ce chef-d’œuvre de Dreyer, ils évoquent inévitablement le fameux vers de Bucolica, la singulière pièce poétique de Publius Vergilius Maro. 　　Omnia vincit amor ; et nos cedamus amori 　　L’Amour résiste à tout : il nous faut lui céder 　　Amor Omnia est librement inspirée des Bucoliques de Virgile dont il intègre le texte original. C’est une œuvre acousmatique dans la mesure où l’image est parfois volontairement cachée, mais aussi une œuvre cinématographique au sens où celle-ci consiste en une écriture à partir du son et de l’image. Lorsque la parole se fait entendre, l’écran noir, cette surface filmique essentielle, apparaît à l’instar du film Blanche Neige de Joao César Monteiro. Ce dernier dit dans un entretien : "Manoel de Oliveira voulut faire un film entièrement noir, tandis que j’en ai réalisé un gris. La voie est alors encore ouverte." 　　La langue de cette œuvre est le latin. La version originale sous-titrée en français est accompagnée de la traduction en vers de Paul Valéry, parue aux éditions Gallimard en 1956.
